Hughes: Carlisle United will have ‘competitive’ budget in bid for promotion

Mark Hughes says Carlisle United will go into the Nationwide League with a “competitive” finances as they attempt to get the higher of big-spending rivals.

“There are still clubs in the National League who are spending a lot of money. A couple of them have missed out on going up, the likes of York and Forest Green.

“They’re going to be up against us, so they’ve got very healthy budgets that, by all accounts, are at a high level, certainly for the National League anyway.

“We’ll be competitive, I know that, in terms of any budgets that we have. We just have to make best use of the budgets that we have.”

The latter level is especially pertinent given how Carlisle’s spending in League Two in 2024/25 did not repay.

On agent fees alone United spent the fourth highest quantity within the fourth tier, but completed second backside and suffered relegation.

Hughes has stated that Carlisle’s close-season recruitment efforts are actually gathering tempo after the latest reorganisation on the membership, with the arrival of head of soccer operations Marc Tierney and the departures of sporting director Rob Clarkson and head of recruitment Greg Abbott.
